College Mennonite Church
Mentor Program for Youth

A Mentor program is offered to sixth graders to provide an adult friend who models the way of faith and offers support and caring for our youth. The program, under the umbrella of the Nurture Commission, entrusts mentors to be one link between the church and the mentee and to represent the church in showing personal interest and investment in the life of one of our youth.

The Mentor program continues through the mentee's senior year in high school. Mentors are asked to develop a relationship with their mentee, showing interest and care for them. Mentors are a primary link between the mentee and the church, and are asked to have a minimum of one contact a month. A contact can be a phone call, a chat in the hall after church, a card, participation in an activity or attendance at a mentee's event at school.

A recognition service is held for the mentee and their mentor during Sunday morning worship. The youth, parents and mentor are introduced. The youth are given a NRSV Study Bible. The mentors are given a booklet, "When a Teenager Asks for You." A prayer of blessing is given for the mentor and mentee.

Several mentor/mentee events are planned throughout the year for different age groups, for example canoe trips, bike trips, service projects, and an annual taco supper and game night. Mentors also participate in the Faith Exploration class with the youth and often offer a prayer at their baptism.

Church and Your Child

"Christian education is the most important aspect of congregational life for helping people of all ages grow in their faith. Done well, Christian education has more potential than any other area of congregational life to promote faith."

This is the word from Eugene C. Roehlkeparptain who published Search Institute's study of more than 11,000 adults and youth in six mainline denominations.

At College Mennonite Church we are committed to help nurture our children, youth and adults to grow in faith. We want each one to love God and have a relationship with Jesus that brings joy into their lives and the lives of others. Our Nurture Commission is committed to using Anabaptist curriculum with children and youth in Sunday school and to provide meaningful activities on Wednesday nights, in choir, at retreats, and in Bible school. We have an excellent teaching staff that is dedicated and enthusiastic about sharing their faith and providing opportunities for children to develop meaningful relationships as they grow in faith. Our Christian education program seeks to support parents as they nurture children toward a mature Christian faith.
